Class Reflection 3
Big Idea: Graphics!
The main theme for today’s class was graphics. We discussed how when using graphics to teach, it is important to be intentional. Each graphic should serve a purpose and help to further students’ learning.
Why Should We Create Our Own Graphics?
- To Demonstrate what you are asking students to do
- If you are teaching something specific
- If you cannot find and accurate or helpful graphic online
- It is a helpful tool for students
Some questions you can ask yourself to make sure the graphic is there to help the learner include:
- What information is the graphic trying to convey?
- Is it conveying the information you want it too?
- Is there unimportant or irrelevant information within the graphic?
- Is there a better graphic online or that you can create?
Cognitive Load
| Type | Description | Goal |
| Intrinsic | Complexity of a task/idea | To manage it |
| Extraneous | Design of materials | To minimize it |
| Germane | Connection to past learning | To maximize it |

Regardless if you are creating your own graphics or using some from online, they should always be learner centred.
